To be honest, it took me 5 months to complete this book. My main goal is to read it because it has been in this house since I was a kid. I was so little when this book was first introduced and I remember how fast my sister was able to read this. At that time, I was not interested to read any grown-up books and when I did try reading this, I cannot continue it. It feels boring. So, I decided to finish reading it at a mature age.

I gave this 2/5 stars because I cannot connect with any of the characters. I feel sad for the only man that cares for the main character and in the end got heartbroken. The main character keeps on pursuing and having dreams to be with someone out of her league which she gets at the end. It is dreading to see how the character development is. On the other hand, I really appreciate the depiction of the historical events that happened. It was hard to live in that era. Also, I appreciate the flow of writing which is best believe to be one of the most enjoyable poetic words and sentences that I have read in my life.

The most notable sentences that I really love are:

"From the mountaintops, the ocean looked like a crumpled blanket in turquoise, with stains of dark blue"

"But now I know that our world is no more permanent than a wave rising on the ocean. whatever our struggles and triumphs, however we may suffer them, all too soon the bleed into a wash, just like watery ink on paper"

Highlights of this book

  • All about Geisha

  • Coming of age

  • Love? ( I have mixed feelings about this)

  • Loss

Memento (something to ponder on)

"Adversity is like a strong wind. I don't mean just that it holds us back from places we might otherwise go. it also tears away from us all but the things that cannot be torn, so that afterwards we see ourselves as we really are, and not merely as we might like to be. "

Rating

2/5 ( Cannot connect with the characters but I do appreciate the story and beautiful way of writings)
